Keeping the aspect ratio correct
Aspect ratio is the relationship between an image's width and height — a 1200×800 photo has a 3:2 ratio. Change only the width without adjusting height proportionally and the image looks stretched or squashed. The "Lock aspect ratio" checkbox above does this math for you: type a new width and the height updates automatically (and vice versa) so the image keeps its original proportions and nothing looks distorted.
Upscaling vs downscaling
Shrinking an image (downscaling) is generally safe — you're discarding pixels, so quality loss is minimal and mostly imperceptible. Enlarging an image (upscaling) is riskier: the tool has to invent new pixels that were never in the original, which usually results in a softer, blurrier image the more you scale up. For best results, start from the largest source image you have and avoid upscaling by more than a small amount — dedicated AI upscaling tools can do better than simple resizing for large enlargements.

Why does my resized image look blurry?
This usually happens when upscaling — enlarging an image beyond its original dimensions forces the tool to generate new pixels that weren't in the source, which softens fine detail. Downscaling (making an image smaller) doesn't have this problem since it only removes pixels.
Should I lock the aspect ratio?
Yes, in almost all cases — it keeps the image looking natural by scaling width and height together. Only unlock it if you specifically need to force an image into a non-matching frame, such as a fixed banner size, and are okay with some stretching.
What format is the resized image saved as?
